Offline documentation on the construction site and shop floor: why it is essential
On the construction site, on the shop floor or inside a plant, there is often no connection. But the technical datasheet or the manual is needed right there, at that moment. Offline consultation, with the documents downloaded and always updated at the next sync, solves exactly this.
The mobile coverage that carriers advertise is population coverage, and it is high. But at work something else matters: that the signal is there at the exact spot and the exact moment you need the document. And there, on the shop floor, on the construction site or underground, the gaps remain. It is not a flaw in your smartphone: it is the physics of radio waves.
Where the network does not reach
Steel structures act as a Faraday cage. In a steel-shell building the 900 MHz signal is attenuated on average by 28,5 dB (NTIA measurement): the shop floor, in effect, switches off the network.
Metallized glass and insulating panels with metal foil block the signal more than an old building: the international standards put it in black and white (ITU-R P.2109).
No pre-existing infrastructure, and temporary metal structures. Population coverage is high, but geographic coverage leaves gaps: in the United Kingdom good 4G covers 81% of the territory from all carriers, against 96% of the population (Ofcom).
In tunnels and basement spaces the mobile signal does not propagate by design: dedicated radiating cables are needed (CDC/NIOSH). Underground the ordinary network does not exist.
In Italy 1,5% of the mapped territory has no mobile coverage, almost all in sparsely populated areas (AGCOM). Worldwide about 300 million people remain without coverage (GSMA).
Metal shelving, cold rooms and industrial environments attenuate the signal like a cage: the network bars drop exactly where you need the datasheet or the part code.
And that is where most people work
It is not a niche case. About 80% of the global workforce, 2,7 billion people, is deskless: working in factories, on construction sites, in the field (Emergence Capital). Yet 33% of frontline workers say they do not have the right tools to work well (Microsoft, 2022) and in factories the majority still use paper instructions (Parsable). The document is needed precisely where the network is not.
The cost of not having the information at the right moment
When information is not at hand at the point where it is needed, work slows down or goes wrong. In construction, professionals spend on average 5,5 hours a week looking for project data, and poor or badly communicated data causes 48% of rework on US construction sites, for about 29 billion euros a year (value converted from dollars; PlanGrid / FMI). An outdated drawing or an unfindable procedure is not an annoyance: it is work to be redone.
